Headcanon time, so shoosh
The first time John sees Dave’s eyes, Dave’s not worried at all, ‘couse Jade and Rose have already seen them and they didn’t say anything about it, so it should be ok with John too, shouldn’t it?
So he just, dunno, takes off his shades for whatever reason without thinking too much about it, but then John goes “LOL weird” becouse John is that kind of idiot who just says whatever passes through his mind without thinking at all. Dave start panicking and shuts his eyes and won’t open them whatever John says, ‘couse wow he could just put the shades on again, why in the hell did he just shut his eyes now everything is even weirder and he doesn’t know what to do and so just doesn’t do anything at all. Yes. Awkward.
But then John goes “COME ON MY EYES ARE NOT THAT NORMAL IN THE FIRST PLACE JUST STOP BEING A BABY AND OPEN YOUR EYES YOU DORK” and Dave realizes that oh, Rose’s eyes are fuckin lilac and Jade’s are so green that colour should not even exist, let alone being on the eyes of anyone, and yeah, John’s eyes are pretty weird too, with their blue too much blue.
So he just goes “…We’re a fucking bunch of weirdos” and John goes “And you just realized?” and everything is okay becouse being a weirdo isn’t that bad in the end.
Then John starts rambling about how much red seems the eye colour of some anime character and Dave just wants to punch him in the face. THE END.

Yeah I was just trying the new marker’ settings.
This is the same reason why I think Dirk actually loves his eye colour and wears the shades only becouse they’re cool, but has no problems at all with being seen without them on. Yep.
